Thermal shock resistance

Thermal shock resistance is the ability of a material to withstand the mechanical load caused by a rapid change of temperature. If the material is not able to handle the change of temperature, it is likely to crack because the stress levels exceed the tensile strength of the material. This is a risk for ceramic materials used in high temperature environments. The material type is the most important factor, but the thickness and transitions in the design also influence the resistance of a part.

When ceramic parts are used in furnaces, it is important to know the time needed for cooling and heating the parts. Parts made of aluminium oxide can deal with a temperature increase of approx. 200 °C per hour. Other materials like silicon nitride and boron nitride can withstand direct contact with molten metal (non-ferrous).
